Upper Valley Farm to School 2018 Mini-Grants!

I am so excited to announce the 2018 mini-grant program at Upper Valley Farm to School! We have funding focused on both Vermont and New Hampshire schools. Start dreaming up your farm-to-school projects – we want to support you!

Mini-grants are designed to help your school, afterschool program, or school-related wellness program launch projects related to farms, our agricultural heritage, farm products, food production, or local food consumption at the school itself.

A broad range of projects have received funding in recent years including field trips to local farms, food from a local farm, materials for gardens and garden activities, and stipends for farmers, teachers, or FTS coordinators. Funds could also be used in the cafeteria, to pay for training, supplies, or equipment.

 NEW FOR 2018: The maximum mini-grant award is now $500. Both New Hampshire and Vermont schools are eligible to apply for funds. Recipients in both states are required to present their project at Trek to Taste on June 2, 2018 (in addition to other grant requirements, below). We encourage schools to include costs related to project presentations and attending Trek to Taste in their grant budget.

Students from all grades have planted in most of our 13 raised beds, our pumpkin patch, and have tended our fruit trees and berry bushes. Students from grades K-5 will care for the new plantings throughout the next week. Grade 4 has become the school’s new tree steward team; today we calculated how much fertilizer we need per tree and spread our own school-grown compost to ensure excellent soil health! – Cat Buxton, Garden Coordinator, Thetford Elementary School, Thetford, VT

• Our K-2 pod has plants growing for our gardens outside. The plants are growing really fast!
• Our 3-5 pod has planted lettuce inside, using our new grow cart from Cafe Services. This will be our first crop and we hope to be eating it soon!
• The 6-8 pod has planted seeds to get ready for their salsa garden.

Our K-5 students participated in a healthy snack competition and each class kept track of what the children brought in to eat. We used the Whoa, Slow, Go guide to calculate points. The students were really excited and proud of what they brought in for their snacks.

Our 6-8 students participated in our annual smoothie competition. Each advisory picked from a list of healthy foods for ingredients in their smoothies. We had 11 judges pick the top three smoothies and the winners will get to make healthy pizzas for lumch.

During all of these events, we had our annual Health Week where FTS provided some of the healthy snacks we had each day. The last day we had a “bring a fruit to school day” and we ended up with so much fruit that we made fruit salads for all K-8 students.

There’s been a lot of planning for our “lab gardens” here at NES.  Each classroom has adopted a garden or raised bed.  Our 5/6 team has committed to keeping the permaculture gardens in shape and also the perennial beds around our historic Common.  The K/1 team plans to plant a “5 senses garden”, and a 1/2 class is planning a butterfly garden.  In enrichment, we host gardeners from grades K-6 who have been making good choices in school.  This allows us to work with small groups as we work in the garden spaces.  Students in the 3/4 team have been interviewing our culinary guru, Chef Paul, to plan and plant vegetables that will be used to support the school lunch program.  Also, 3 beautiful laying hens have made their new home in back of our school.  K/1 students have enjoyed learning about their quirky habits and finding eggs each day to use in classroom projects.
Additionally, we have a robust community group that’s committed to “Grow a Row” activities and also helping Chef Paul process vegetables for the upcoming school year.  As you can see, things are really cooking at NES now that spring has finally arrived.  Our best to all of you gardeners out there! – Kim Goody, Farm to School Coordinator, Newbury Elementary School, Newbury, VT

Taste of Tunbridge a Huge Success!

The third annual Taste of Tunbridge community dinner was a huge success. We had a fantastic crowd of more than 100 people in attendance, plus a successful take-a-chance table and Thanksgiving turkey raffle to help raise funds for our Farm to School program. This potluck dinner had one requirement, each dish shared must include at least one local ingredient. Each TCS grade and TA had a hand in preparing part of the meal, and created delicious dishes such as applesauce, carrot soup, Swedish apple bake, kale chips, baked wheat crackers, homemade rolls, baked beans, macaroni and cheese, and more.
