We completed our planning grant in December. The grant allowed us to pursue our dream of creating a sustainable salad bar program at our school. The grant also influenced our curriculum in many ways. Teachers and staff really got on board using farm-to-school lessons to teach many topics that were already in their curriculum. Each class went on a farm-to-school field trip, created taste tests for the rest of the school community, and participated in a Harvest Pot Luck during our annual Turkey Trot race in November. We are now thrilled to have received an implementation grant! We attended the Farm to School Awareness Day at the state house and brought along a 6th-grade student to share a project that her class did called “Seed to Spaghetti,” from planting a crop of tomatoes to creating a savory sauce to be used at a fundraising spaghetti dinner in January. We are excited to keep working on farm-to-school initiatives at our school. – Kim Goody, Farm to School Coordinator, Newbury Elementary School, Newbury, VT
