More Farmers and Artists Join “Climate Farmer Stories”

The Climate Farmer Stories project continues with another cohort of Vermont and New Hampshire farmers and artists!

At the end of March 2023, the second cohort of farmers participating in the Climate Farmer Stories project met virtually to learn about the project and a bit about each other. The cohort of 12 farms represents a wide range of farm type, farming practices, and Upper Valley geography. The group includes diversified vegetable farms, regenerative livestock farms, a dairy farm, a fermentory (fermenting ciders and wines), a gristmill, and one of the largest saffron farms in North America.

This cohort of farms uses a variety of regenerative farming techniques that promotes healthy soil management, carbon sequestration, and biodiversity. Many are using low- and no-tillage practices, cover cropping, mulching, drip irrigation, zero synthetic fertilizers, on-farm composting, and other practices to protect soils, water, and wildlife habitat. Those with animals are incorporating silvopasture practices and intensive, rotational grazing. Many are using solar panels to power farm systems and finding other ways to reduce overall carbon footprints. These farms are all contributing to a sustainable, vibrant working landscape supporting community and regional resilience.

In April, the farmers were able to select among a range of artists and choose the one whose style most speaks to them. Over the months of May and June, the paired artist and farmers will meet and begin collaborating on a portrait, whether it be a painting, illustration, or quilt.
