Upper Valley CRAFT had the great fortune to visit Edgewater Farm in Plainfield, New Hampshire this week. Pooh and Ann Sprague started Edgewater Farm 41 years ago as part-time farmers growing sweet corn and strawberries to sell out of the back of a truck.
The farm has come a long way in four decades and has expanded to include more land and various enterprises including 26 greenhouses, a CSA, vibrant farmstand, poultry, and prepared foods.
Pooh shared stories about their humble beginnings of the farm and was clearly proud as he told us about the expanding family involvement with the farm as his 2 adult children have returned to the help run the farm. Pooh also advised our group of future farmers to remember how important it is to balance work and family – a balancing act that he is just figuring out. After four decades of long, hard farm work these days he is making time to play music with his band, kayak on the Connecticut with the farm crew, and have grandchildren playing around the farm.
After visiting Edgewater Farm continue down River Road to Mac’s Maple for sweet syrup and Riverview Farm where they are picking late season blueberries and early apples.
