The “How-Tos About ADUs”

Want to learn how to build an Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) on your property? Curious about how ADUs can help address our region’s housing crisis? Come learn from builders, planners, housing innovators, and more about what ADUs are and how to make them happen! Come to the 2023 Home Creators Expo — a partnership between the Town of Hartford, Two Rivers-Ottauquechee Regional Commission and Vital Communities — at the Hartford Area Career and Technology Center on Saturday May 6.

The Upper Valley needs hundreds of new affordable houses and apartments. Many of these new units can be built by converting part of or adding on to existing homes or placing another home on the lot. These ADUs fit in with our neighborhoods, create income for owners, enable accessible living spaces for seniors, provide places for needed workers to live, increase economic activity in the area, help keep school enrollment steady, and save on energy. Please park in front of the high school off of Hanover Street. There are stairs to the HACTC entrance to the right of the high school building. The parking lot in front of HACTC is reserved for those with accessibility needs.

WORKSHOP AND SPECIALTY TOPIC DESCRIPTIONS

ADU Basics (101) – This workshop is your road map to ADU development from conception to the initial stages of construction. Join this session to discuss ADU concepts and raise your overall awareness of ADUs as housing model and strategy.

ADU Advanced (102) -This session will get into the nuts and bolts of ADU construction. Here you will find details on the permitting process and start generating some ideas for how to move from conception to reality!

Design – This specialty topic features ADU designers and architects that can provide examples of the dos and don’ts from a design perspective. Come here to discuss design options with experts in the field!

The “Home” Team – Root, root, root for ADU advocates that are taking the model to Town Hall! Learn how to build allies in the community to help advance municipal initiatives that incentivize ADUs and the ability for individuals to create new homes.

DIY – Interested in taking a Do-it-Yourself approach to ADU creation? Start honing your building skills with this engaged conversation on the pros and cons of acting as your own general contractor in a building landscape of supply and labor shortages.
