As our Farm-to-School Planning Grant winds down here at Newbury Elementary School, one of our culminating initiatives was to host a Farm-to-School Harvest Pot Luck. On the Monday and Tuesday before Thanksgiving, each classroom (K-6) created a dish to share with everyone (approximately 180 people) on the day of our annual Turkey Trot. Each classroom took pride in preparing their offering from mostly locally procured ingredients. Our grade K/1 class, named the Buffaloes, grew the carrots and garlic for their Stone Soup. Apples for the applesauce made by the Caterpillar Kindergartners were purchased from a local orchard. Pumpkin bars were made from pumpkins grown over the summer in some of our school garden space. Students learned a lot in the process, and used cooking utensils and appliances from two large cooking kits that were purchased with our grant money. It was a fabulous event! – Kim Goody, Newbury Elementary School, Newbury, VT
