Unity students, staff, parents, and community members will be working together to construct a butterfly/herb garden this spring. The first step in this project will occur on Earth Day, April 22. The students will plant seeds in recycled milk cartons from the school cafeteria. These will later be transplanted into the school garden. In addition to these plants, we will add herbs and other beneficial perennials. The students will also be involved in the steps to construct the garden, and learn about the importance of creating native habitats for birds, bees, butterflies, and other beneficial creatures. The final step of our project will be to learn harvesting techniques and the many benefits these plants offer to humans. – Jennifer Thompson, Teacher, Unity Elementary, Unity, NH
