Third and fourth graders at Reading Elementary School learned about Native America in social studies. Students discovered that corn was an important aspect of native culture. They have had the unique opportunity to weave learning into many curricular areas while working on their Trek To Taste project. Third and fourth graders visited the Mt. Kearsarge Indian Museum in Warner, NH where they discovered that corn was an important food staple in many cultures throughout North America including New England. Students also learned that corn was used for many other things besides food. Daniella from Green Mountain Flour taught students about the important parts of grains that provide important nutrition. Children tried their hand at grinding corn using a mortar and pestle and a hand mill. It was a lot of work! In Spanish class, students made tortillas using local corn meal.
