“Our new HSS garden has been very active this past month. During mini garden tours for all our classrooms the second week of school, students and teachers harvested Boston Marrow squash and German potatoes and delivered them to our cafeteria where they were prepared and shared at lunch. They also picked carrots, Tom Thumb popcorn, Mayflower beans, sunflowers, lettuce, midget watermelon and birdhouse gourds. To promote the garden, we took one of the squash and had a contest to guess its weight. The winner got to take it home. With the help of the 18 garden club students who meet after school on Fridays, the beds have been cleared, and this past weekend we installed hoops with donated plastic from Longacre’s Nursery. We are planting a number of cool weather crops and will be amending the soil, making garden signs, researching, planning for Spring, and much more in the coming weeks.” – Marjie Bish – Hanover Street School, Lebanon, NH
