The Tim & Janet Taylor didn’t set out to be farmers, but soon after buying a house and 15 acres in Post Mills, Vermont they started selling produce off a card table by the side of the road. Over the past 35 years the farm has expanded to 6o acres and produces fruits, vegetables, and flowers which they sell at their farmstand and the Norwich Farmers’ Market, through a CSA, and wholesale to co-ops, restaurants, and institutions. To get an idea of the amount of produce they supply the Upper Valley each year – they sell 25,000 pound of tomatoes, 5 tons of greens (yes, that’s a lot of lettuce), and 4,000 quarts of strawberries.
To produce so much food, the Taylors hire about 15 seasonal workers during the summer months. They make an effort to hire local teens (their philosophy is that hiring local is as important as buying local) and the farm provides lunch to the entire crew at an all-farm lunch break.

Crossroad Farmstand is open daily and should be the centerpiece of a fun summer day in the Fairlee area.
In addition to being amazing farmers, they are also active/vital community members. In 2014 they conserved their farm to ensure that it will stay open and productive. Tim is actively sharing his years of knowledge and experience with new and beginning farmers by teaching classes through the University of Vermont Extension and hosting numerous farm tours and demonstrations, like the one I went to last week (see photo below). Janet is a Vital Communities Board member and grower extraordinaire that brings several hundreds of herb starts to Flavor of the Valley each year. The Taylors are remarkably generous with their time in support of local food and local farms.
After visiting Crossroad farm stand take your fresh veggies and goodies to Treasure Island for a swim and a lakeside picnic. And don’t miss seeing the Vermontasuarus at the Post Mills Airport, exploring Vermont and Civil War history with the Post Mill Cemetery Quest, and stop at Baker General Store’s King Kone – because no family adventure is complete without ice cream!
