Even after seven and a half years working in the field of TDM (that’s Transportation Demand Management), I get confused by the dozens of transportation-related acronyms thrown around by planners, state officials, transit providers, and sometimes even me!! They’re convenient shorthand if you know what they mean. But if you don’t know, they can be a big turn-off to getting involved in local transportation issues!
So, I’m sharing this New Hampshire guide to transportation acronyms, courtesy of our friends at UVLSRPC (that’s the Upper Valley Lake Sunapee Regional Planning Commission). Vermonters will find it useful too — most of it is relevant to the Upper Valley as a whole. And if you’re still stumped, here’s an incredibly long but thankfully alphabetical glossary from the FHA (that’s the Federal Highway Administration).
Now you’re prepared to attend a municipal bike/walk planning meeting or even a GACIT hearing (that’s the New Hampshire Governor’s Advisory Commission on Intermodal Transportation) and sound and feel like a pro!
