During the month of October, planners, advocates, and organizations across the northern Hemisphere take advantage of the autumn season to promote pedestrian health, safety, and leisure. Here in the Upper Valley, the weather is tempering, the bugs are dwindling, and the colors are popping; it couldn’t be a better time to take a walk in our lovely region! To help inspire you Autumn Walkers, Vital Communities’ transportation team has started compiling some upcoming walking events worth checking out:
Sunsquatch Story Walk at Greensboro Ridge Natural Area in Hanover
The Hanover Conservancy is hosting a fun and creative story walk on the Greensboro Ridge trail loop during the month of October. In this self-guided walk you’ll learn about the battles between Sunsquatch and Baron Von Carbon, and discover what you can do to fight climate change. Gory Daze Halloween Parade in White River Junction – Saturday, October 29
WRJ’s beloved Main Street Museum hosts this favorite annual event. This year’s homemade costume parade is led by Burlington-based street band, Brass Balagan. Visit http://gorydaze.org/ for more information.
Commute Smart NH’s Buses, Bikes, and Brooms Commuter Challenge
Consider incorporating walking into your daily commute as part of Commute Smart NH’s Buses, Bikes, and Brooms Commuter Challenge and reduce the number of trips you take driving alone. Participants can log trips walking, biking, transit, carpooling, telecommuting (working from home), or any combination of these options as part of the month-long commuter challenge.
SNSC’s Walk, Roll, and Ride Group – Tuesday, October 11
The Special Needs Support Center will take in the fall scenery as they walk, roll, and potentially ride the bus around downtown White River Junction. All are welcome to meet at SNSC’s offices at 129 South Main St in WRJ for the group tour around town from 10:30am-noon. Visit
